what we do
Principle One provides a range of consulting services to customers across UK government, with a particular focus on the UK Law Enforcement and National Security sector. Since our launch, we have contributed to programmes that make a difference at national level, often working in rainbow teams with other suppliers or embedded directly into our customer’s teams.
We work through government frameworks including GCloud and DOS and are part of the Vivace community, providing expertise and capabilities to the Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE), a Home Office unit within the Department for Homeland Security.

multi disciplinary systems engineering
We have been providing a multi-disciplinary team to support the development of a new national data management capability for UK Law Enforcement since early 2020. As part of a wider multi-supplier team we provided leadership, architectural and business analysis skills for a central design team, providing a range of different skill sets from initial technical Discovery work through construction of an Alpha to enable technical de-risk work through into delivery of tactical capability to support soft launch. Our team have supported systems and business analysis, stakeholder engagement and implementation planning as well as working within a customer-led agile software delivery team. This has been a large scale, complex delivery due both to the legislative drivers behind the new capability and the broad range of stakeholders engaged remotely in the implementation.
I have had the incredible opportunity to have hands-on experience with a large-scale project from the very start of my career. Through conversations with my Career Mentor and with colleagues who have more experience in the domain and similar roles to mine, I have gained invaluable skills of how to approach problems, how to use tools to the best advantage, and ideas for how and where to progress my career. Importantly for me, I have a say in where my career goes and therefore what roles and skills I would like to focus on.

CASE STUDY
business change
We have been working with a central government department to support the planning and mobilisation of a new telecommunications capability. Initially our support was focused on stakeholder engagement and the development of the business case for the new capability, but has now broadened to cover the organisation design, development of a solution architecture, security requirements and recruitment strategy. Our team has had to respond flexibly to changes in priorities, budgets and the wider stakeholder landscape, remaining focused on delivery throughout.
I work within a rainbow team, working with five other consultants from Principle One as part of a larger team including civil servants and contractors from other consultancies. I have enjoyed a supportive team culture from the start, working closely with our Engineering Director to design the solution architecture. This gave me a great opportunity to develop skills and learn Enterprise Architect. The trust that my team has for me is also really important - you work independently, but get support and guidance whenever required, so it has been a great experience and very different from my previous role at a large consultancy.

rapid prototype development
As part of an eight week engagement, we were asked to support a government customer in exploring how existing, highly manual processes could be digitised and brought on line to enable productivity benefits from increased automation and a full audit trail of the process. We provided a small team to rapidly gather business requirements, map existing processes and develop prototypes to demonstrate the art of the possible to the end customer. Following agile ways of working, the team developed simple prototypes with Microsoft PowerApps that could be rapidly enhanced to address customers feedback and provide a strong understanding of the scale of the challenge and the opportunity to provide a technical solution.
This project allowed me to develop my technical skills working within a multi-discipline Principle One delivery team. I was asked to lead and help upskill a small team of junior developers, which was a fantastic opportunity to develop my own coaching skills while also learning from the more senior members of the team.
The chosen technology allowed us to rapidly develop the prototype and very quickly adjust and develop features according to customer feedback in a matter of days (or sometimes hours!). It was challenging at times to work at such a fast pace but it was really satisfying to have helped clarify the customer's next steps in a short space of time.
